Course Description
The supportive role of Oral Probiotics has been researched for more than 30 years. This extensive research has become more exposed in the past 10 years revealing positive impacts for ear, nose and throat health, halitosis, candida, periodontal disease and tooth decay. The introduction of oral probiotics to support oral health is now an emerging trend that can help influence and promote oral microbial balance to improve outcomes of periodontal disease, halitosis, caries and more. A major focus for Dental Hygienists is to help our clients shift from a pathogenic biofilm to a healthier, more balanced biofilm by utilizing the many adjunctive therapies that are available to us. The challenge lies in helping our clients to prolong and maintain that healthier balance to stop the progression of disease.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain how a healthy oral microbiome is compromised.
  2. Evaluate the large body of scientific evidence in support of oral probiotics.
  3. List some of the pathogens targeted by various oral probiotic strains.
  4. Identify a particular oral probiotic that can help reduce the incidence of ear and throat infections.
  5. Differentiate between the types of oral probiotics available and their supportive role in disease prevention
    and maintenance.
